About Us
The Drift Forward Project is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting first responders living with post-traumatic stress through the proven therapeutic benefits of fly fishing.
Founded by a former ski patroller and paramedic with lived experience of PTSD, the organization was built from a deep understanding of the unique mental health challenges faced by first responders. While clinical therapy is vital, it can often be emotionally exhausting, leaving many feeling isolated and without ongoing support. The Drift Forward Project bridges that gap—offering an accessible, restorative, and community-based approach to recovery.
Fly fishing provides more than recreation; it offers healing through mindfulness, focus, and connection to nature. Our programs create a safe, stigma-free environment where first responders can rediscover confidence, build supportive peer relationships, and find peace in the outdoors.
Through guided retreats, peer-based outings, and ongoing community engagement, The Drift Forward Project helps participants strengthen emotional resilience, reduce symptoms of post-traumatic stress, and rebuild a sense of belonging. Our goal is to ensure that no first responder faces recovery alone—and that each one has the chance to drift forward, one cast at a time.
The Need
First responders dedicate their lives to protecting others, yet many carry the invisible wounds of trauma. Studies show that up to 30% of first responders will experience PTSD during their careers, leading to increased risks of depression, substance misuse, strained relationships and suicide. Traditional mental health services are not always accessible or effective for this unique population. There is a critical need for alternative, community-based healing programs that meet first responders where they are — in safe, supportive and restorative environments.
Our Mission
Our mission is to improve the quality of life for first responders affected by PTSD by providing therapeutic fly fishing experiences that foster healing, resilience and community connection. Through nature-based programming and peer support, we help participants build pathways toward lasting recovery and renewed well-being. We envision a world where every first responder has access to the tools, community and restorative spaces they need to heal from the invisible wounds of service, rediscover purpose and thrive in both life and work.
