About Us

The Drift Forward Project is a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping first responders manage occupational stress through the proven therapeutic benefits of fly fishing. Based in Calgary and the Bow Valley, AB.

The Drift Forward Project was created to build community, connection, and accessible outdoor experiences for first responders navigating occupational stress and post-traumatic injuries. We are not a replacement for professional mental health support, but we believe time on the water, meaningful connection and shared experiences can be powerful tools alongside it.

Right now, the focus is simple: creating a welcoming community through beginner-friendly fishing days, events, and opportunities for people to get outside and connect. Long term, the goal is to provide guided experiences, equipment access, retreats, and greater support for those who need it most.

The Need

First responders dedicate their lives to protecting others, yet many carry the stress of the job into their home lives. Studies show that up to 30% of first responders will experience PTSD during their careers, leading to increased risks of depression, substance misuse, strained relationships and suicide. Traditional mental health services are not always accessible or effective for this unique population. There is a critical need for alternative, community-based healing programs that meet first responders where they are - in supportive and restorative environments.

Our Mission

Our mission is to support first responders affected by occupational stress by providing therapeutic fly fishing experiences that foster community connection. Through nature-based programming and peer support, we help participants build pathways toward lasting stress management. We envision a world where every first responder has access to the tools, community and restorative spaces they need to heal and thrive in both life and work.
